My Dad, Sorting Through Memories

I am on the other side. I wasn't sure what it would be like, but here I am surviving the journey of life.
My dad, William August Radig, passed away November 27, 2018 peacefully in his sleep. He was at home being cared for by my patient and loving mom.
He was 82 years old. Married for 54 years. Raised three daughters. He has eight grandchildren.
The past eight weeks have been filled with story sharing, laughs, loving moments, closure, forgiveness and celebration.
I am not in a place of lack. In fact, I feel abundant.
I know my dad had a full life. I know he loved us. I know he worked hard. I know he enjoyed his life. I know he was at peace and ready to sleep. He welcomed it. That was a his final gift to us. We go on living knowing that peace.
You know why I know this was was supposed to happen? Because it it did.
We are celebrating his life.
Sorting through memories.
I have to admit, I was in a bit of overwhelm last night as I was falling asleep. Why does that always happen when you are so tired and want to be asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow? Needless to say, it all passed as soon as I got a good night sleep. The reason I felt this was because of my thoughts. I was thinking there is so much to sort through, phone calls to make, people to speak to, decisions to be made, kids to take care of to keep the family on track, staying the course for my business, etc., etc.
I changed my thought and had a sentence that I said to myself that gave me peace. I said:
I CAN do this. It really isn't too much. It's just what is. I really do enjoy tasks and getting them done. I really love the hustle. I will get it all done!
I am in the process of creating a memorial movie to celebrate and capture the fullness of my dad's life. Like any project it is always more lengthy than you think it will be. I have created many memorial movies over the years and this one has really taken me on a journey.
We have been sorting through pictures. Some pictures of my dad that I don't remember. It has been so much fun looking a pictures from his side of the family. Including a death card of his aunt and uncle written in German from Germany! SUPER COOL! I appreciated that there were enough pictures to feel connected to the history and legacy of my family. Even though I didn't know the people in the pictures, I felt a connection to them and I was glad to be able to gaze at their faces. I ALSO appreciated that there weren't thousands of pictures to sort through. This is only true because it was a luxury for my dad's family to have a camera and take photos.
For some reason, in the process of scanning the old photos I decided to scan some of my own (a task that I have put off for years). I thought what the heck, if I have my high speed scanner out I might as well do mine, too-right? In the middle of it all, I asked myself, "How many pictures and memories does one family need"?
I have thousands of photos! THOUSANDS!!
How many do I need?
Truly only enough for my legacy to enjoy.
What did I do?
I did a BIG edit!
I think I'm doing a favor for my children's children, children.... etc.
I am creating memory books with only the best pictures.
I am NOT going to leave THOUSANDS of pictures for them to sort through. I think that would be a good thing.
This project of editing photos is a good reminder of all of the belongings we must go through and how important it is to do so ALL OF THE TIME!!
I'm also thankful that my parents downsized a year ago. They moved from Huntington Beach to San Clemente. That job of closing their family home of 42 years was complete. It sure has made my dad's passing a lot easier on my mom knowing that she doesn't have to go to the HB house and have memories and thoughts of my dad around every corner and shadow. They have really done a good deed us to be organized and not have too much for any of us to go through. We should give the same courtesy to our own families.
If you need help with editing your own life. I am ready to help. I've learned a lot over the years.
I am creating a program to offer to small groups of you all to DIY! Most of you can do it yourself. I will create the task lists, time line, deadlines, goals, and schedules.
Dedicate 2019 to be the year of EDITING!!!
Stay tuned for early bird specials.
Email me in the meantime if you have any questions.
