Stage 2: Organizing

Thank you for visiting my blog today.

Ok, now we are going to make the space look stream lined and clean! Woo Whoo! Perhaps it took you one or two days to finish stage 1. That's ok. It was worth the time to remove all of those unused and unnecessary items. Don't you feel A LOT lighter now?

1. Step back and get a big picture of your space and make an actionable plan - Let's take your closet for an example. Think about the best area in your closet for your long dresses. Where is a good spot for your jackets - maybe you want to move your jackets and coats to another closet that has the space, perhaps in another bedroom or coat closet else where in your home. Doing this can free up your closet space and have you organize it in a totally different way.

2. Combine like items - I'll continue to use your closet. Hang all of your shirts in one area. I like to keep my closet organized by color. All of my blue shirts are together no matter if they are long sleeved or tank tops. Side topic here: I am not a patient shopper. I can walk into a store and decide if it is my look or not. If the store is unorganized, I will 1. leave, or 2. not spend much time there. Last January I went to Marshall's and everything was color coordinated. I was like a kid in the candy store. It was so pleasing to the eye that I spent a lot more time sifting through the racks. I couldn't put my finger on why this visit to Marshall's was so productive and fun?? I soon realized it had to do with the color coordination of all of the clothing racks. I really wanted to let the management know that I enjoyed shopping there that day because of the organization of the clothes. Good thing my kids weren't with me because they would have been embarrassed that I sought out the manager to her know how nice the store looked AND felt. I asked her why everything was color organized on this day and not other days. And she simply said that they had just finished their annual inventory. Well, I told her to keep it up this way and I would bet that their sales would increase! I am no retail expert, but like I said before I am an impatient shopper and I certainly did purchase more that day than I usually do. --- Back to organizing... just think of your closet like a retail store. If you are looking for a blue blouse to where wouldn't it be easier to find if all of your shirts were hung up color coordinated? I think so!

3. Match your items to your space - I will refer back a bit to step 1. If you are in southern California like I am. You probably don't need to where a jacket more than 3 months out of the year. So why take up precious real estate in your closet for items that you don't need access to all that often. You will know where to find those jackets and coats when you need them.

4. Buy organizers - First look around your home to see what items you already own. Let's not break the budget buying cute baskets and such.

5. Clean and Finish - Don't skip this step. If you are removing all of your shoes out of your closet, vacuum and wipe down the area underneath them. Don't put things that are decluttered back in to a dirty, dusty spot. You will feel better that the job is well done.

Keep it Sweet and Neat,

Stephanie
